Constant Talke
• Remove the child from the situation. Put the talker in a separate desk away from other students.
• Ask questions directed at that student so he/she is forced to pay attention.
• Stop talking in the middle of a sentence and focus your entire eye contact on the student who is talking.
• Use nonverbal communication. While you continue with your lesson walk over to the offending student and move his chair to a different area of the class. This is most effective if you don’t break stride while teaching.
Openly Defiant Student:
Remove the child from the rest of the class. Not outside the room, but isolate him/her within the classroom.
• For a very serious offense the student should be sent to the office.
• Keep the class working on a project that doesn’t require your attention and talk to the defiant student, in the hall, right away.
• Try to determine the cause of the misbehavior and then change the situation to accommodate both you and the student.
Cheating Student:
• Encouraging students to compete with themselves and not with the other students will help cut down on cheating during examinations.
• Stress to the cheating student that it is the act of the student that you disapprove of and not the child himself. Point out to the student that he/she is only cheating himself.
• Don’t call attention to the cheating in front of the entire class. Talk to the student after the class has ended and the other students are out of the room.
• After you have confronted the offender, consider the matter closed, unless the cheating reoccurs.
• Don’t leave the room during an exam and tempt the students to cheat.
The Hyperactive Child:
• Avoid distractions for this type of child. Keep him/her seated away from windows, doors, and other distracting objects.
• Use verbal and nonverbal clues with this type of student. As you are saying take out your colors for art, you should hold up a pack of colors. This helps reinforce the correct behavior.
• Put a bright sheet of paper under the child’s work. This will help the student focus on that specific assignment.
• Have a quiet area set up in your classroom for this child to do his/her assignments.
Inappropriate Language:
• Calmly tell the student that this type of language is not used in the classroom. Explain to the student what type of language can be used in the classroom.
Don’t insist on a class apology. This just brings
